Villa Thymallus is located in the quiet village of Sanica, in northern Bosnia’s Una-Sana Canton. Sanica is a small rural settlement along the Sanica River, part of the wider Ključ municipality area. Like many rural villages in Bosnia, it has seen significant depopulation since the 1990s due to economic migration and the aftermath of the war. The community remains traditional, with most families tied to farming, forestry, and seasonal tourism or fishing.
In the former Yugoslavia, Sanica was declared the most beautiful and the first tourist village thanks to its abundance of nature, the Sanica River spring, and lush surroundings — a recognition that highlighted its potential as a peaceful retreat.
The Sanica River — just a pleasant 5-minute walk from the villa — is one of the region's best wild grayling waters. Restaurant Sanica sits on the banks and is a fantastic place for mid day or evening meals.
The landscape is unspoiled: rolling hills, dense mixed forests, and the nearby Grmeč Nature Park (≈200 km² of protected plateaus, beech-fir forests, and trails). The nearest larger town is Ključ (about 20–30 minutes by car), with supermarkets, pharmacies, banks, petrol stations, and basic services.
