The Best Rivers Near Villa Thymallus

SANICA & KORČANICA

Our home Rivers The Sanica and Korčanica.

The Sanica (Sa-ni-tsa) is a beautiful, clear karst river in northwestern Bosnia and Herzegovina, roughly 20–22 km long. She rises from several strong karst springs in the hills east of the village of Sanica at around 450 m elevation and flows through forested valleys and pastoral landscapes before joining the Sana River. Its oxygen-rich, gravel-and-rock bed and steady flow make it one of the best small rivers in the region for wild grayling (which make up around 70% of the fish population) and healthy brown trout. The most productive fly-fishing stretch is about 5 km long and is known for technical dry-fly and nymph fishing in a serene, tree-lined setting.

The Korčanica (Kor-cha-ni-tsa) is a short right tributary that joins the Sanica in the village of Sanica. It offers a compact, pristine course that can be stalked in a single morning and serves as an important spawning ground for salmonids, including grayling, brown trout, and rainbows from the farm. Due to its sensitive ecology, the Korčanica allows only one group of anglers per day and requires pre-booking with the river keeper to preserve the wild fish and habitat. Together, both rivers provide an intimate, lightly fished fly-fishing experience in a classic Bosnian karst landscape. Both rivers open march 1st-31st october inclusive

UNA AND TRIBUTARIES

The Una And Her Tributaries (45mins-1h20)

The Una River is Bosnia's most iconic and beautiful waterway — known locally as "The One" (Una in Latin). It rises in the mountains 10 km into the Croatian border and flows for about 220 km through stunning turquoise canyons, waterfalls, and remote valleys before joining the Sava River. The Una is world-renowned for its crystal-clear water, abundant wild brown trout, grayling, and huchen (Danube salmon), making it a top destination for fly-fishing. The stretches around Kulen Vakuf & Bosanka Krupa are especially prized for its scenic beauty and productive beats.
Una at kulen Vakuf opens May 1st - 30th september inclusive

The Krušnica (Krush-ni-tsa) River joins the Una at the beautiful town of Bosanka Krupa. A stunning, emerald karst tributary of the Una (~45–60 min drive north of Villa Thymallus), sheer depths of upto 30ft, known for exceptional wild trout and grayling fishing in a calm canyon setting. The Krušnica is the best river in the world to catch Huchen with dry feet. Limited daily permits and pre-booking required — perfect for a special day away from Sanica.

Krušnica opens May 1st - 30th september inclusive. as does Una at Bos. Krupa

The Unac is the 2nd tributary of the Una, only 10 km upstream from Kulen Vakuf. Fishing is mainly from the trout farm exit, downstream, to its mouth joining the Una. Mainly Rainbows but the odd Brown Trout can also be caught.

Unac opens march 1st - 31st october inclusive

Ribnik And Pliva Rivers (40mins-1h30)

The Ribnik is legendary in European fly-fishing circles. Only 5 km long, this crystal-clear, spring-fed river is famous for its huge numbers of wild grayling and is widely regarded as one of the best technical grayling fisheries on the continent. It is strictly managed with a daily limit of just 40 anglers and is catch-and-release only, offering superb dry-fly and nymph fishing in shallow, clear water. Ribnik And Pliva offer day tickets all year round.

The Pliva (and its tributary the Janj) provides a slightly larger river experience with beautiful runs, pools, and consistent hatches. Both rivers hold healthy populations of Greyling and Brown Trout, Pliva being well known for its large Greyling 60cm+

Day permits for both are easy to arrange through the Ribnik Fly Fishing Center. Many serious European anglers consider a trip to the Ribnik a bucket-list experience.
